Some of these trenches were only 20 feet apart and the gunfire so intense that in the museum they have thousands of bullets that have fused together having collided in mid air during battle. Strangely enough in the evening they stopped shooting each other to allow the dead and wounded to be collected. That is why it is sometimes referred to as the 'gentleman's war'.
